Biography

Gene is a seventh-generation East Tennessean and has been engaged in the private practice of law for over twenty years. He has earned a reputation as an aggressive and successful attorney, focusing his practice primarily on criminal defense. Licensed in all Tennessee State Courts, Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, and the United States Supreme Court, Gene is an experienced litigator and routinely appears in both federal and state courts across East Tennessee. A skilled trial lawyer, Gene has represented clients in a large number of jury trials and obtained favorable results on charges ranging from serious violent felonies such as first-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery, to possession and sale of narcotics and driving under the influence. He is also an experienced orator and has briefed and successfully argued numerous cases before the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals.

Gene has the distinction of being among the select group of attorneys in Tennessee that have been certified, pursuant to Rule 13 of the Tennessee Rules of the Supreme Court, to represent clients in death penalty trials. This certification is given only to lawyers with significant jury trial experience and an extensive knowledge of the defense of capital cases.

Gene received his law degree from the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis and his undergraduate degree from East Tennessee State University.
